With the advancement of technological solutions, companies are implementing an increasing number of new systems, and as a result, different departments need to find ways to organize their communication. In this context, systems integration has become a crucial demand in today's market.

This integration allows different areas of the company to share data efficiently, promoting connected and organized work. In addition, systems integration helps prevent rework and optimize the company's financial and human resources.

What is systems integration?

Companies use various software solutions at different stages of their processes, and these systems need to be connected. This connection between multiple systems is known as systems integration. It is essential for enabling interaction between different digital tools and technology platforms.

By integrating a company's systems, it is possible to gain an end-to-end view of its processes, from product development to production, logistics, and distribution.

As a result, processes in one area of the company can be optimized based on data obtained from another area. This systemic operation facilitates internal workflows and directly impacts the quality the company delivers to its customers.

Today, systems integration can be performed using different technologies. Some of the most common in the market are:

Systems integration via API

Perhaps the most widely used approach today, systems integration via API is also the most modern. API stands for Application Programming Interface.

An API works as a bridge between two software systems, allowing information to flow from one to the other in real time. The solution also enables data encryption, which is an advantage for information security.

As a disadvantage, the cost of an API can be high (reaching $21,000), and for companies with many systems to integrate, this amount increases proportionally.

Database

A simpler option, although one with lower information security, is integration through database sharing using data extraction software.

To implement this solution, a professional known as a Database Administrator is required. This professional will have access to all information across all systems, which is a point of concern from a security perspective.

Electronic data interchange

Electronic data interchange uses software that works as a “universal translator.” This solution collects data from one tool and exports it to a single system, where it is standardized. As with databases, information exchanged through electronic data interchange may be more vulnerable to cyberattacks.

Systems integration with automation

Systems integration can also be performed using RPA (Robotic Process Automation). Integrating a system with RPA is essentially the automation of a task with the goal of migrating or integrating one or more different systems.

This type of automation is commonly used in ERPs (Enterprise Resource Planning) and other systems and applications used by the company.

The use of RPA in systems integration also facilitates employee workflows because, by automating tasks, many operations that previously took a long time can be completed more quickly.
